Patrick Musombwa

Painter | DR Congo / France

Musombwa's colourful, expressionist paintings and collages with layered textures exploit the themes of man’s life and walk represented by deformed bodies and faces. In his surrealist works he fuses influences of Edvard Munch with 3D effects and abstract elements.⠀

My hybrid characters question the fusion of African and Western traditions. The primary concerns are the notion of questioning the way of living together.

Portrait

Patrick Musombwa, born in Kinshasa 1988, graduated from the academy of fine arts in Kinshasa in 2009 with further artistic residencies and workshops in DR Congo and France, resides and works in France as young emerging artist.

Musombwa early on turned to nonfigurative art with a particular emphasis on colors, which he considers as the main carriers of emotions depicting his often deconstructed forms.  His colorful, expressionist paintings and collages with layered textures exploit the themes of man’s life and walk represented by deformed bodies and faces. In his surrealist works he fuses influences of Edvard Munch with 3D effects and abstract elements.

Musombwa started being recognized in exhibitions early on during his fine art studies in Kinshasa and quickly found his way to the international market. He has been exhibiting mainly in French speaking territories like DR Congo, Belgium and France but recently exhibited in the Netherlands. He is scheduled to be represented on several international art fairs across Europe.
