OpenArtExchange is proud to present Re-formation, a duo-solo exhibition featuring works by contemporary Beninese artists: Sanda Amadou & Marcel Kpoho. We warmly invite you to the opening on Saturday, August 29 at 15h00 at OpenArtExchange, Hoogstraat 85, Schiedam.

Re-formation explores the processes of construction, transformation, and renewal: what can be formed now from what already exists? The exhibition considers the past not as something fixed, but as something we continuously reinterpret and reshape. In the practices of Sanda Amadou and Marcel Kpoho, this process takes place both materially and metaphorically. Existing forms and materials are dismantled, intertwined, reassembled, and given new lives. Fragments become the starting point for other stories, relationships, and possible futures.

In Sanda Amadou's sculptures, fabrics, fibres, and organic forms intertwine into structures that exist somewhere between organism and architecture. Inspired by the interconnectedness of ecosystems, Amadou approaches his works as living structures in constant transformation. Elements grow together, depend on one another, and evoke natural cycles of construction, decay, and regeneration. They become living archives in which memory is held not as something static, but as something that continues to grow and evolve.

For Marcel Kpoho, transformation begins with the material itself. Working with discarded tyres, he reshapes an industrial material associated with weight, movement, and waste into semi-abstract sculptures that appear unexpectedly delicate, fluid, and alive. Tve. This material has led Kpoho through many conceptual avenues, from questions of ecology, consumption and links between pasts and presents to the political relationship between Europe and Africa. In Re-formation, Kpoho's sculptures are approached through their transformative power. The tyres arrive with histories of their own. They have travelled, carried weight, crossed distances, accumulated marks, and eventually been discarded. In Kpoho’s hands, they become carriers of memory, transformed into the substance of something new.

Through dinstinct visual languages, Re-formation explores the idea that nothing is static, materials evolve, transform and, most importantly, can be reformed through human action. Materials carry traces of where they have been, but those traces do not determine what they can become. They transform, meanings shift, ecosystems regenerate, and memories are continually rewritten through the present. By re-forming what already exists, Amadou and Kpoho create space to imagine what might exist next.
