As a visual artist, Damilola Olusegun always works with graphite and charcoal on canvas or paper, in combination with acrylic paint, which brings her work to life. She contrasts her lifelike autonomous portraits in charcoal with brightly colored accents and flat, monochromatic, almost alienating backgrounds.
“I tell stories without writing an essay”
Damilola Olusegun (1997) was born and still lives in Sagamu, Ogun state, Nigeria where she owns a studio and work space. Through the years, she has always been fascinated by art, which she believes is being created to interpret and represent one’s mindset. Her father was the one who discovered her talent and pushed her to develop her skills.
Being a self-taught, Olusegun delved more into her artistic practice, which involved getting exposure to more materials to upgrade her works. She work with graphite or charcoal (or both). Through her artwork she is able to pass on messages without writing an essay, most artworks deal with emotions and self discovery. She connects with her environment and situations around her vicinity before creating any art piece.
Damilola has also trained other artists specializing in her category of art, in both offline and online teachings. She trains them in order to help them foster the same enthusiasm that she has for art.
She has participated in exhibitions both home and abroad, so far she had one solo exhibition in Nigeria.
Damilola won the award for Best Young Visual Artist of the Year 2019 by The Everyday Chapter. Her works have also been featured as cover pages in art publications in Average Art Magazin and A5 Magazine.
