Jonathan Vatunga

Painter | DR Congo

Jonathan Vatunga’s work originates in the observation of the daily struggles. It reflects a society where, as he says, “men are destroyed by men”.

“My work always seeks new ways to explore human nature, emotions, experiences, feelings, insights in a way that lift people out of their daily lives.”

Portrait

Working and living in Kinsasha, DRC, Jonathan Vatunga believes that, as an artist, his duty is to stimulate society in order to find solutions for this world full of evil and vices. His work originates in the observation of the daily struggles. It reflects a society where, as he says, “men are destroyed by men”. He is interested in the vulnerability and suffering in the world and depicts them intertwined with joy in order to convey a peaceful message. Besides, he is conscious of the issues that migrants undergo and tries to pay a tribute to all these men, women and children, hoping to bring awareness and the awakening of society.

Painting, engraving and collage are the techniques that allow Vatunga to represent the dynamic world in its constant transformation. He usually depicts different characters formed of superimposed lines, as a person who disintegrates or decomposes under the pressure of society. He deconstructs the figure of the human body by showing the life that is being reconstructed, a story that is being rewritten.
