Yao Metsoko (1965) maakt symbolisch geladen mixed media werken waarin herinnering, mythologie en het onzichtbare centraal staan. Vanuit zijn Akposso-afkomst en de Afrikaanse kosmologie verwerkt hij natuurlijke materialen, totemische beelden en abstracte vormen tot expressies van spirituele en voorouderlijke aanwezigheid. Zijn werk vormt vaak een brug tussen het fysieke en het metafysische en nodigt uit tot een reflectieve ontmoeting met persoonlijke en collectieve geschiedenissen.

Yao Metsoko (geb. 1965, Togo) is een Frans-Togolese kunstenaar die de relatie tussen traditie, spiritualiteit en hedendaagse expressie onderzoekt. Geboren in het dorp Tomégbé, nabij de Ghanese grens, put hij uit zijn Akposso-erfgoed om een symbolische beeldtaal te ontwikkelen die Afrikaanse en westerse culturen met elkaar verbindt.
Al op jonge leeftijd werd Metsoko beïnvloed door de religieuze beeldtaal van zijn moeder en de mondelinge verhalen van zijn grootouders. Zijn werk is diep geworteld in herinnering, mythe en het onzichtbare. Hij werkt vaak met materialen als jute en verwerkt totems – zoals olifanten, palmbomen en vissen – als symbolen voor de verbinding tussen het zichtbare en het onzichtbare.
Zijn praktijk omvat schilderkunst, mixed media en installaties, waarin hij natuurlijke elementen, traditionele iconografie en abstracte vormen samenbrengt. Thema’s als afkomst, natuur, het vrouwelijke en transformatie staan centraal, evenals een spirituele zoektocht naar een eenheid tussen de innerlijke en de uiterlijke wereld.
Metsoko omschrijft zichzelf als een “energiegeleider” en nodigt de toeschouwer uit zijn werk niet alleen visueel, maar ook intuïtief te benaderen—waarbij sporen van het sacrale en de blijvende aanwezigheid van het ontastbare voelbaar worden.
