Sebastien Boko heeft een erfelijke kennis en passie voor hout. Het is een familieovertuiging dat het bloed zich mengt met de sap en doordrenkt is in het werk. Inderdaad, na zijn studies begon hij in de werkplaats van zijn vader in Zogbodomey in Benin te leren houtsnijden.

Sebastien Boko (1984), born and raised in Benin in a family of sculptors, received his artistic formation from his father’s workshop in Zobodomey in Benin, through artistic collaboration with amongst others Dominic ZinkPé and several international residencies. Although sculpture is his main form of artistic expression, Boko doesn’t hesitate to cross over to other forms including performances, installations, slam poetry, and music which explains the diversity and uniqueness of his work.
In zijn semi-figuratieve en abstracte sculpturen gebruikt hij vaak symboliek uit de Afrikaanse Gélèdè-cultuur, geplaatst in een hedendaagse setting met een mengsel van materialen zoals hout, metaal en symbolistische objecten van gemengde media, waaronder hangsloten en stukken kettingen. Hij recyclet vaak materialen van olievaten en auto-onderdelen.
Boko is goed bekend in Benin en heeft de afgelopen jaren verschillende prijzen ontvangen. Hij heeft deelgenomen aan vele internationale tentoonstellingen en symposia in Frankrijk, Oostenrijk, Zwitserland, Turkije, China, Japan, Tanzania, Senegal, Mali, Ivoorkust, Togo en Nederland.
