Colorist Ovraiti toont olieverfschilderijen en acrylschilderijen met zware texturen, waarbij duidelijke invloeden van Picasso worden samengevoegd met de kleuren en het licht van de Franse impressionisten en zijn eigen onnavolgbare stijl. Sam Ovraiti, born in 1961 in Zaria Kaduna State, holds a Higher National Diploma (HND) and a Master of Fine Arts Degree (MFA) from Auchi Polytechnic and the University of Benin respectively and lives and runs his artist studio in Lagos. He was committed as a lecturer and was instrumental in the training of young artists in Auchi Polytechnic from 1985 – 1993. He is a deep and philosophical artist with passion in artistic research and experimentation, especially with colours and light. This aspect has been heightened by his long-term relationship with Professor Dr Bruce Onobrakpeya and the well known Harmattan Workshop, of which he currently is the artistic director.
Sam is a very well recognised and influential artist in the contemporary art space in Nigeria, not only known as the most expressive watercolourist and a leading master in colours and light, but also through his regular artist talks, the Harmattan workshop and his ongoing mentoring of many artists. His efforts in the area of watercolour and chalk pastel in the 1980’s popularized both materials as an acceptable painting medium within the art community in Nigeria and he is also very well recognized for his later oils and acrylics.
Sam has been honoured with several academic awards and national prizes. His paintings are well received all over the world and he has participated in many solo and group exhibitions in Nigeria and abroad. Last year, he was honoured with a grand retrospective solo exhibition at Alexis Gallery in Lagos and at this moment his work is featured in the National museum in Lagos.
Sam Ovraiti, geboren in 1961 in Zaria Kaduna State, heeft een Higher National Diploma (HND) en een Master of Fine Arts Degree (MFA) van respectievelijk Auchi Polytechnic en de Universiteit van Benin en woont en runt zijn kunstenaarsstudio in Lagos. Hij was werkzaam als docent en speelde een belangrijke rol in de opleiding van jonge kunstenaars aan de Auchi Polytechnic van 1985 tot 1993. Hij is een diepgaande en filosofische kunstenaar met een passie voor artistiek onderzoek en experimentatie, vooral met kleuren en licht. Dit aspect is versterkt door zijn langdurige relatie met Professor Dr. Bruce Onobrakpeya en de bekende Harmattan Workshop, waarvan hij momenteel de artistieke directeur is.
Sam is een zeer erkende en invloedrijke kunstenaar in de hedendaagse kunstwereld in Nigeria, niet alleen bekend als de meest expressieve aquarellist en een toonaangevende meester in kleuren en licht, maar ook door zijn regelmatige kunstenaarsgesprekken, de Harmattan-workshop en zijn voortdurende mentoring van vele kunstenaars. Zijn inspanningen op het gebied van aquarel en krijtpastel in de jaren '80 hebben beide materialen gepopulariseerd als een aanvaardbaar schildermedium binnen de kunstgemeenschap in Nigeria en hij is ook zeer erkend voor zijn latere olieverfschilderijen en acrylverf.
Sam is geëerd met verschillende academische prijzen en nationale onderscheidingen. Zijn schilderijen worden over de hele wereld goed ontvangen en hij heeft deelgenomen aan vele solo- en groepsexposities in Nigeria en daarbuiten. Vorig jaar werd hij geëerd met een grote retrospectieve solo-expositie in de Alexis Gallery in Lagos en op dit moment is zijn werk te zien in het Nationaal Museum in Lagos.
