Henri Kalama (1973) is een schilder en kunstprofessor die bekend staat om zijn unieke benadering van abstracte kunst. Kalama gebruikt gedurfde kleuren en vormen om emoties, spiritualiteit en verbinding uit te drukken. Zijn werk heeft als doel een universele taal te creëren die door mensen uit alle culturen begrepen kan worden. Henri Kalama Akulez (1973) is een schilder, geleerde en professor die bekend staat om zijn abstracte werken. Geboren en getogen in de Democratische Republiek Congo, heeft hij gestudeerd aan de Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Kinshasa. In het begin werd zijn werk beïnvloed door de Congolese kunstscene, die zich richtte op Afrikaanse identiteit door middel van maskers, symbolen en patronen. In de jaren '90 wendde Kalama zich echter tot abstracte kunst om zijn emoties en spirituele opvattingen persoonlijker uit te drukken.
Kalama's studies brachten hem buiten Congo, waar hij meer dan tien jaar in China doorbracht, waar hij een Master's degree en PhD in visuele kunsten en fenomenologie behaalde aan de China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Deze ervaring hielp zijn artistieke visie vorm te geven en versterkte zijn overtuiging dat kunst culturele, politieke en geografische grenzen overstijgt.
Zijn werk draait om "cosmische vibraties," die hij beschrijft als de emoties en spirituele energie die door kleur worden overgebracht. Kalama ziet kleuren als dragers van diepe gevoelens en universele waarheden, vaak voorbij woorden. Zijn abstracte benadering nodigt kijkers uit om intuïtief met het werk om te gaan, en de "waarheid van het bestaan" te verkennen door niet-representatieve vormen.
Als een leider in de hedendaagse Afrikaanse kunst daagt Kalama de stereotypen van Afrikaanse creativiteit uit, waarbij hij de populaire afbeeldingen van maskers en tribale thema's verwerpt.
