Nely koetsier

Sculptor | Netherlands

Nely Koetsier (1943) is an auto didact plastic artist, who creates abstract stone sculptures cut back to their essential form. She takes the identity of the stone as the center point of her creations, revealing it bit by bit as she manually works her way with chisels, files and rasps. She works in a very intuitive way, allowing lines to organically transform into different forms from different sides. Her artworks invite the spectator to touch its polished appearance and follow its movement from all sides.

“It is important that my works are touchable, that my sculpted stones feel good. I reveal their softness in all their hardness.”

Nely Koetsier (1943) is an autodidact plastic artist, who was initially into performing arts. Amongst others, she taught dramatic education at the Rotterdam School of Applied Sciences, provided healing through expression coaching and studied at the Academy for Expression through Word and Gesture in Utrecht and later psychology. Being a long term collector of stones, after retirement, she acted out her deep interest in plastic arts and started sculpting classes with the Rotterdam sculptor Bert van Beek with whom she is still working for more than 10 years.

For the greater part of her life Koetsier was mainly concerned with the human body as a means of expression, whether through dance, music, or theater or a combination of these. These works of art are transient in nature, so the impact of the interaction between the maker and his audience is therefore only partially conveyed. As a plastic artists, Koetsier still comforts with her expressions, albeit in a solidified, permanent form.

As such, Koetsier creates organic abstract sculptures, cut back to its essence. She takes the identity of the stone as the center point of her creations, revealing it bit by bit as she manually works her way with chisels, files and rasps. Koetsier: ¨It is important to select your stones carefully. They invite you to get to work with them. I really enjoy discovering their identity, uncovering their natural beauty”
